Natural Vitamin C vs. Synthetic Vitamin C vs. Ester C

Vitamin C is perhaps the very first thing that pops into our heads whenever someone says something about vitamins. It boosts the immune system, functions as an antioxidant, and helps maintain healthier, firmer, and younger skin. We do not manufacture our own vitamins and so we count on foods for all we need.

Natural vitamin C can be found in whole foods as well as whole food-based supplements. It is the type of vitamin C that is less processed, more active, and less toxic compared to the synthetic isolate. Natural vitamin C is responsible for maintaining cardiovascular health, promoting healing, boosting immune cell function, working as an antioxidant, and fighting off allergic responses and different types of allergies. Several studies have demonstrated that the antioxidant impacts of vitamin C work effectively in combination with other antioxidants.

Ester C is an acid neutral product with different composition from natural vitamin C or ascorbic acid. The primary component of Ester C is calcium ascorbate and other ingredients, including vitamin C metabolites, which are calcium threonate and dehydroascorbic acid. Manufacturers of Ester C claim that it has superior bioavailability compared to vitamin C. However, research studies do not support this statement.

In a study published in 2006, it was found that participants with high sensitivity to acidic foods are able to tolerate Ester C better compared to regular vitamin C. These individuals did not experience any stomach side effects. Then again, research does not support the claim of Ester C’s superior bioavailability.
